AAI Corp. continues to lead by example in delivering safe, professional, and high-performance vehicle operations across Calgary International Airport (YYC) and Springbank Airport (YBW). At the center of this effort is our adoption of the AVOP Training Simulator a forward-thinking solution that is transforming how we train, test, and prepare our teams for the unique challenges of airside operations.
Proven Success in Real-Time Situations
Since implementing the AVOP Training Simulator, we have seen measurable gains in readiness and performance. New hires reach operational competency faster, experienced personnel benefit from targeted skill development, and safety-critical scenarios such as poor visibility driving or emergency routing can be rehearsed without exposing our people or equipment to unnecessary risk.
AAI is leading by example in reducing reliance on live-vehicle training without compromising quality or standards. This strategic shift has improved safety, protected assets, and allowed for more precise performance evaluation during training.
Key Advantages
The benefits of the AVOP Training Simulator are clear:
- Enhanced Safety: Operators can train for complex scenarios in a controlled environment, including active apron navigation, restricted zones, and emergency responses.
- Cost Efficiency: Reduced vehicle use, fuel consumption, and instructor time result in meaningful savings.
- Standardization: Every trainee receives the same instruction based on our operational policies and YYC/ YBW requirements.
- Immediate Feedback: Real-time performance insights help identify areas for improvement and reinforce best practices.
- Controlled Scenarios: We can replicate high-risk or uncommon situations safely something not possible during live training.
- Faster Onboarding: The simulator helps trainees build confidence before entering active operational zones, accelerating their readiness.
The addition of the Flight Simulator into our state-of- the-art training room has been an epic success! It’s a real-time training aid where, as an AVOP Trainer, I am able to mimic ATC with real- life radio calls and give the team real-life scenarios for OJT and to aid in the testing requirement. The team is also using a handheld mic and doing their callups and readbacks, then actually driving their actual routes.
It’s also been valuable as the team gets to practice their Nav Canada and ROC-A phraseology. It has also saved us valuable training time, especially in regard to YBW.

Supporting Infrastructure Projects Through Visual Learning
Leading by example means anticipating operational needs before they arise. As AAI Corp. supports complex airside construction and infrastructure developments, the AVOP Training Simulator plays a crucial role in visual learning and project orientation.
We are now using simulator-based modules to mirror actual construction layouts, staging zones, vehicle reroutes, and security access points. This allows both supervisors and airside escorts to fully understand project parameters before being deployed, especially in restricted or evolving work areas.
This method enhances planning, reduces orientation time, and minimizes the risk of incident or delay while aligning with client and authority expectations.
Preparing for the Springbank Runway Project (YBW)
A clear example of this proactive approach is our current preparation for the Springbank Airport Runway Project. The AVOP Training Simulator is being actively used to train and test our escorting teams in advance of the project start.
Simulations are tailored to reflect the actual layout of YBW’s project site, including entry/exit points, contractor coordination, and runway access procedures. This ensures that when our teams arrive on-site, they are fully briefed and capable of operating safely and efficiently from day one.
Future-Ready Training
AAI Corp. continues to lead by example in the aviation services sector by pushing the boundaries of training innovation. Future plans for the AVOP Training Simulator include:
- Customized scenarios for high-traffic intersections and evolving airport layouts
- Expanded use of virtual reality for immersive, scenario-based experiences
- Integration with real-time analytics to track and benchmark trainee performance against operational metrics
These enhancements will further strengthen our ability to develop skilled, compliant, and confident personnel ready to meet the demands of both routine and high-stakes operations.
“The Aprons, Runways, Taxiways, Tenants, and the important spots became real while driving using the simulator which already built my confidence ahead of being at Springbank airport for the real work. This is an amazing development in AAI, and it is commendable.”

A Strategic Investment in Our People and Performance
At its core, the AVOP Training Simulator represents a strategic investment in both our people and our clients. It ensures that every vehicle operator whether new to the role or highly experienced is equipped with the tools, training, and mindset to perform at the highest standard.
As AAI Corp. supports infrastructure expansion at YYC, major projects at YBW, and future government-led operations, we continue to lead by example. Through advanced simulator training and specialized surveillance escorting services, we are setting the benchmark for operational readiness, safety compliance, and professional excellence across all airside operations.
